I will now reboot my iMac in Recovery Disk mode and re-install Mavericks on the MacMini. When I then fired up Disk Utility there was my disk - newly erased. In my case it said The Core Storage Logical Volume Group UUID is 48AE3F70-916B-4BEB-AF63-0C2423E1481EĮrror: -69783: Unable to delete the CoreStorage Logical Volume Group % diskutil cs delete XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX <- put the Logical Volume Group ID in place of the Xs In the left-hand pane, select the administrator account whose password needs to be reset. Click the lock icon in the bottom left corner of the preference pane and enter your administrator password. Select the username and click next > type a new password and confirm it. Type ' resetpassword ' > Select hard drive partition containing the user account. Go to Utilities Menu at the top and select Terminal. Launch System Preferences, and select the Users & Groups preference pane. Restart your Mac while holding the Command+R keys at the startup. Enter a new password as well as a new password hint. Select the storage device that contains the operating system. A welcoming graphical window will appear, allowing you to reset your admin password in a familiar way.
